On Saturday, April 7, 2018 five students from Hollidaysburg Senior High School traveled to the University of Pittsburgh to compete in the Inaugural Western Pennsylvania Olympiada of Spoken Russian. This is a national competition sponsored by ACTR, the American Council of Teachers of Russian.
Students had to perform in three categories:
1--Speaking about themselves in an interview
2--Civilization, which was reading and answering texts about culture
3--Reading and discussion, and reciting a poem.
Students also competed in categories ranging from Level 1 through Level 5. Each student spent five minutes with a different judge during the competition. Judges were from Carnegie Mellon, University of Pittsburgh, and Russia.
Students were awarded medals or certificates, depending on their performance. “This was amazing. It was great to experience the culture including language, food, and games. Awesome day!” Vlad Hilling, Russian III student.
