The Hollidaysburg Area School District is located in the center of Blair County, in central Pennsylvania, approximately 95 miles east of Pittsburgh and 130 miles west of Harrisburg. The district encompasses 120 square miles and comprises the boroughs of Hollidaysburg, Duncansville and Newry, and the townships of Allegheny, Blair, Frankstown and Juniata. With Hollidaysburg as the Blair County seat, the district has a stable population of approximately 26,500 residents. The school district is located in a vibrant region, strong in retail industry, ongoing commercial development, and diversified small industries. There is a regional convention center within district boundaries. A semi-professional baseball stadium, serves local sports enthusiasts. New housing starts continue at a steady pace. Homes in the Hollidaysburg Area School District maintain their property value, in large part due to the popularity of the school system. Seven colleges are located in the region including St. Francis, Juniata, Mount Aloysius, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, The Pennsylvania State University, Penn State-Altoona, and the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Campus.
Faculty
District staff consists of approximately 477 employees: 260 teachers, 22 administrative/supervisory staff, and 195 support staff. The professional staff are certified by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and approved by the school board upon recommendation of the superintendent. Fifty-one percent of the staff have earned master's degrees, and about a third have completed academic work beyond the master's level.
Extracurricular
Students may participate in a variety of extracurricular activities including student government, athletics, various clubs, drama, and music organizations. Six sports are offered at the junior high, while the senior high provides ten sporting activities for boys and nine for girls. These interscholastic sports include the traditional sports as well as soccer, tennis, golf, volleyball, swimming, and cross-country. Elementary students may participate in an intramural sports program, consisting of football, flag football, basketball, and wrestling for boys, and basketball for girls. Elementary band, chorus and orchestra are available for students in grades five and six. A number of the athletic teams have captured league and District VI Championships. Several individuals have captured state honors. Students in a variety of music organizations have been top place winners in local, county, state and national competitions.
